My Personal Skincare Routine
Over the years, I've learned that consistency matters far more than having a cabinet full of products. I don't chase every new trend. Instead, I've built a routine around products that work well for my skin and habits that I can realistically maintain every day.
My goal isn't "perfect" skin. It's healthy, balanced, glowing skin that still looks like skin. You can shop all of my recommendations here: Via my SHOP MY
Over the years, I've learned that consistency matters far more than having a cabinet full of products. I don't chase every new trend. Instead, I've built a routine around products that work well for my skin and habits that I can realistically maintain every day.
My goal isn't "perfect" skin. It's healthy, balanced, glowing skin that still looks like skin. You can shop all of my recommendations here: Via my SHOP MY
Morning Routine
Step 1: Cleanse
I begin each morning by either rinsing my face with cool water or washing with the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser, depending on what my skin needs that day.
If my skin feels clean when I wake up, a simple rinse is often enough. If I've exercised, applied heavier skincare the night before, or my skin feels oilier than usual, I'll use the cleanser.
I always use lukewarm or cool water rather than hot water to help preserve my skin barrier.
Step 2: Organic Rose Water
After gently patting my skin mostly dry, I generously mist my face, neck and chest (sometimes arms and legs! I also use rose water in my hair for curly days.) with organic rose water.
I love applying my hydrating products while my skin is still slightly damp because they absorb beautifully and help lock in moisture.
Step 3: Anua 70+ Glowy Milk Toner
Next, I apply the Anua Glowy Milk Toner. (one of my new favorites!)
This has become one of my favorite products because it leaves my skin feeling hydrated, calm, and incredibly soft while helping prepare it for the next step in my routine.
Rather than rubbing, I gently press it into my skin using my hands.
Step 4: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun SPF
Every single morning, I finish my skincare routine with the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun SPF.
This is the one step I never skip. Daily sun protection is one of the most effective ways to help prevent premature aging, discoloration, and unnecessary UV damage.
I apply a generous amount to my face, ears, neck, and any exposed chest, then allow it to absorb for several minutes before applying makeup.
Throughout the day, I make an effort to reapply my sunscreen, especially if I'm spending time outdoors or driving. My favorite options are the Sun Bum Face Mist and the Supergoop! (Re)setting 100% Mineral Powder SPF 35.
The Sun Bum Face Mist has been a staple for years. I keep one in my professional makeup kit, another in my set bag when I'm working on film and television productions, and one for everyday life. It's an easy way to refresh my SPF over makeup without disrupting my look, which is why it's become one of those products I always have on hand.
I also love the Supergoop! (Re)setting Mineral Powder. I keep it in my purse, my car, or my carry-on bag so I can quickly touch up my sun protection wherever I am. It's lightweight, mess-free, and incredibly convenient for travel or busy days when I don't want to apply a traditional lotion over my makeup.
I've been using these sun protection products for years, and I genuinely swear by them. Finding products that make sunscreen easy to wear—and easy to reapply—has been one of the biggest reasons I've been able to stay consistent with this habit.
If I'm staying home and not wearing makeup, this is usually where my morning routine ends. (maybe a touch of mascara!)
Evening Routine
Evening skincare is my opportunity to completely cleanse my skin, encourage overnight renewal, and take a few quiet minutes to unwind before bed.
Step 1: Remove Makeup
If I've worn makeup, I begin by removing everything with Garnier Micellar Water or It Bye Bye Makeup cleansing balm.
I use a soft microfiber washcloth to gently lift away makeup, sunscreen, and impurities without aggressively rubbing my skin.
Step 2: Double Cleanse
After removing my makeup, I wash my face with the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser.
Double cleansing helps ensure every trace of makeup, sunscreen, and oil is removed before applying my nighttime skincare.
Step 3: PanOxyl Acne Wash (Only When Needed)
If I'm experiencing breakouts, I cleanse the affected areas with PanOxyl Acne Foaming Wash.
I let it remain on my skin for about two minutes before rinsing so the benzoyl peroxide has time to work effectively.
I only use this step when my skin needs it rather than every evening.
Step 4: Organic Rose Water
Once my skin is completely clean, I mist it generously with organic rose water.
This restores hydration after cleansing and prepares my skin for the rest of my routine.
Step 5: Anua 70+ Glowy Milk Toner
While my skin is still slightly damp, I apply my Anua Glowy Milk Toner by gently pressing it into my skin.
Hydrated skin provides an ideal foundation for the rest of my evening products.
Step 6: Omnilux Contour Face Mask
Before applying my treatment products, I use my Omnilux Contour Face red light therapy mask on clean skin.
This has become one of my favorite parts of my evening because it gives me ten quiet minutes to slow down, breathe, and transition into the evening while supporting my skincare routine.
Step 7: Naturium Retinal
After my red light therapy session, I apply my Naturium Retinaldehyde Cream Serum 0.10%.
I spread a thin, even layer over my face, carefully avoiding the immediate eye area.
I allow it to absorb for several minutes before moving on to my moisturizer.
Retinal has become one of the cornerstone products in my routine because of its long-term benefits for improving skin texture, encouraging healthy cell turnover, and supporting smoother, brighter-looking skin.
Step 8: Argentum Day & Night Silver Cream
Once my retinal has absorbed, I apply my Argentum Day & Night Silver Cream.
This seals in hydration, supports my skin barrier overnight, and leaves my skin feeling soft and nourished by morning.
I don't forget my neck and décolletage, since these areas deserve just as much care as my face.
Step 9: Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask
Before bed, I apply a generous layer of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.
This is one of the final steps in my skincare routine and one I rarely skip. It keeps my lips feeling soft, smooth, and hydrated overnight, and I almost never wake up with dry or chapped lips.
I think healthy lips are just as important as healthy skin, and this simple step has become an easy nightly habit that makes a noticeable difference.
Step 10: Eyelash Enhancing Serum
After my skincare has fully absorbed and my lashes are completely clean and dry, I apply my Forchics Eyelash Enhancing Serum (linked an alternative here).
A small amount along the lash line is all that's needed, and consistency has been the key.
Step 11: Protect My Hair/ face while sleeping
Before getting into bed, I loosely gather my hair into a bun using a large 100% mulberry silk scrunchie. This helps reduce friction, minimizes tangles and breakage, and keeps my hair off my face while I sleep.
One thing I always encourage people to pay attention to is the difference between silk and satin. These terms are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.
Silk is a natural fiber produced by silkworms, while satin simply describes a type of weave or finish. Satin can be made from silk, but it's much more commonly made from synthetic materials like polyester or nylon. Because of this, many products marketed as "satin" are not silk at all.
If you're investing in products for healthier hair and skin, I recommend choosing 100% mulberry silk whenever possible. Silk is naturally breathable, temperature-regulating, and gentle on both your hair and skin, making it more comfortable to sleep on throughout the year. Synthetic satin, on the other hand, can retain more heat and may not offer the same breathability or long-term durability.
In addition to my silk scrunchie, I also sleep with a 100% mulberry silk pillowcase and a 100% mulberry silk sleep mask. Together, they help reduce friction on my hair and skin, feel incredibly luxurious, and have become some of my favorite small upgrades to my nightly routine.
My Philosophy
I've never believed that skincare has to be complicated.
For me, beautiful skin comes from taking care of it every day with products that I genuinely enjoy using, ingredients backed by research, and habits that I can realistically maintain.
Rather than constantly trying something new, I've found that consistency is what creates lasting results. When I cleanse thoroughly, protect my skin from the sun, nourish my skin barrier, use retinal consistently, and allow myself a few quiet moments of self-care each evening, my skin responds beautifully.
It's a routine that feels luxurious without being overwhelming, and one that I genuinely look forward to every single day.
Rise from the Ashes: Escape the Waiting Room of Your Life
It is not fair. We did not ask for this. But here we are. And the only way forward is through reinvention, mindset shifts, and a commitment to action.
The world as we knew it no longer exists.
That’s not hyperbole—it’s reality. The past few years have shattered old systems, uprooted industries, and forced us to confront the unsettling truth that nothing is guaranteed. Careers that once felt stable now feel uncertain. Paths that once seemed clear have faded into fog. Many of us have found ourselves waiting—waiting for things to return to normal, waiting for clarity, waiting for something or someone to tell us what comes next.
But what if normal never returns?
For the past two years, I was stuck in that exact space—waiting. My career in the film industry had been my entire world for two decades. Every choice, every plan, every bit of my identity was shaped around that world. And then, seemingly overnight, it was gone. The industry changed. The work disappeared. And I was left holding the weight of a life I had built on a foundation that was no longer solid.
I grieved. I questioned everything. And for far too long, I waited.
But here’s what I realized: no one is coming to tell us what to do next. No one is coming to rescue us.
The world is in a massive paradigm shift. The systems that once dictated our lives—career paths, industries, education, financial security—are in flux. And while that can feel terrifying, it also means one thing: we have the power to redefine everything.
We must get out of our own way.
We must stand up from the waiting room and take ownership of what comes next. We may not have chosen these circumstances, but we do get to decide how we respond. We can either cling to what once was and risk being left behind, or we can step into what’s possible and create something new.
This is survival.
If you want to thrive in unprecedented times, you must adapt.
It is not fair. We did not ask for this. But here we are. And the only way forward is through reinvention, mindset shifts, and a commitment to action.
This realization is what led me to create Beyond Artistry™: Shift + Thrive—a mindset reset for creatives, freelancers, and anyone feeling stuck in limbo.
Because here’s the truth: most of us don’t lack talent. We don’t lack ambition. What we lack is momentum. We get caught in cycles of waiting—waiting for the right moment, the right opportunity, the right circumstances. But the waiting room will swallow you whole if you let it.
This course is about breaking free from that cycle. It’s about reclaiming your power, shifting your mindset, and moving forward—not just surviving change but thriving in it.
The world is changing. The question is: will you change with it?
The Mysticism of Artistry
To create is to speak the language of the divine. It is an ancient tongue, one whispered through generations, passed down in brushstrokes, in ink-stained fingers, in melodies that haunt and heal in equal measure. It is the mysticism of artistry, the undeniable force that fuels the dreamers, the visionaries, the rebels who refuse to accept a world devoid of magic.
Creation as Ritual, Power as Birthright
Art has never been merely aesthetic. It is alchemy. It is conjuring. It is the act of pulling something from the unseen and weaving it into the tangible. Those who create are not simply makers; they are channels, shapeshifters, architects of new realities.
But we were told to forget. We were taught that creativity was a luxury, a pastime, a fleeting indulgence rather than a sacred birthright. The world told us that to create was to entertain, to amuse—but never to unleash, to disrupt, to reclaim power.
That time is over.
The act of creating is an invocation. It is a summoning of something greater than ourselves, a reclamation of the power we were never meant to relinquish. Every brushstroke, every written word, every note of music is a spell—a defiance against those who would have us small, silent, obedient.
This is where the Sacred Feminine rises. The part of us that knows without explanation, that creates without apology, that moves through the world with unshakable presence. She does not ask for permission. She does not seek validation. She creates because she must.
To stand in your artistry is to stand in your power. It is to remember that your hands are not idle—they are weapons of transformation. It is to recognize that your voice is not an echo—it is a force capable of bending reality itself.
Let them call it indulgence. Let them call it madness. Let them misunderstand the power that drips from your fingertips.
And create anyway.
Because to create is to reclaim. To reclaim is to rise. And to rise is to become unstoppable.
The sacred act of artistry has been calling you back. Will you answer?
Calling Our Power Back
We were told to be small. To be polite. To create within the lines. We were fed the lie that our value was in our obedience, that we had to be chosen, validated, approved.
But we were never meant to be quiet.
We were never meant to ask for space—we were meant to take it.
To be a sacred rebel is to disrupt. To awaken. To demand sovereignty over your voice, your vision, your art.
A Reclamation of Creativity, Sovereignty, and the Sacred Feminine
There was a time when we knew.
Knew how to create without hesitation.
Knew how to trust the whispers of inspiration, the fire in our hands, the visions behind our eyes.
Knew that our power was not given—it was ours to wield.
But somewhere along the way, we were told to dim. To soften. To wait for permission. We learned to second-guess, to shrink, to trade intuition for approval.
That time is over.
We are calling it back—all of it.
Every ounce of creative energy that was stolen, siphoned, or silenced. Every vision left unpainted, unwritten, unspoken. Every wild, untamed instinct that was locked away for fear of being "too much."
We are stepping into the Sacred Feminine—the realm of the deep, the raw, the unstoppable.
This is not the feminine they told you about.
This is the origin of creation. The force that builds, destroys, and rebuilds. The fire that never goes out.
And if you feel it—burning in your chest, stirring in your bones—you are being summoned.
To create like you were never meant to be tamed.
To take up space like you were born to.
To break the cycles of hesitation and return to your power.
This is not a request.
It is a remembering.
The power is yours. Take it.
To call back our power is not a quiet act. It is not a gentle unfolding or a whispered plea. It is an uprising. A sacred rebellion against everything that told us to be less than what we are.
Sacred rebellion is the act of unapologetic becoming. It is the refusal to adhere to rules that were never meant to serve us. It is knowing that to create freely, we must unlearn the limitations we were given.
It is the act of saying:
I will no longer create in fear.
I will no longer mold myself to fit a world that was built to contain me.
I will build my own world instead.
Sacred rebellion is art as resistance. It is creation as revolution. Every brushstroke, every word, every song, every movement—it is all an act of defiance against the forces that tried to keep us hidden.
And so, we rise.
We paint our truth across the walls they tried to keep bare.
We write our names into the pages they tried to keep blank.
We reclaim our voices in a world that tried to silence us.
This is not a moment.
This is a movement.
The time of shrinking is over. The time of rising is now.
Will you answer the call?
The Power of No: Reclaiming Our Energy, Our Boundaries, and Our Future.
We’ve been trained—directly and indirectly—to go above and beyond, to anticipate needs before they’re even spoken, to make things easier for others even when it makes things harder for us. We’re taught that our value is in how much we give. And so, we give. And give. Until one day, we realize we’re walking around carrying a mountain of resentment on our shoulders, an exhaustion that runs bone-deep, and a body that starts to break down under the weight of all the things we should have said no to.
For so many of us—especially women, especially creatives, and especially in the film industry—the word “no” has felt like a locked door. A career killer. An act of defiance rather than a necessary declaration of self-respect. We are conditioned to say yes. Yes to long hours that bleed into personal time. Yes to impossible expectations that stretch us thin. Yes to keeping the peace when we should be raising hell. And for what? To be seen as a team player? To be perceived as easy to work with? To avoid confrontation at all costs?
But at what cost to ourselves?
We’ve been trained—directly and indirectly—to go above and beyond, to anticipate needs before they’re even spoken, to make things easier for others even when it makes things harder for us. We’re taught that our value is in how much we give. And so, we give. And give. Until one day, we realize we’re walking around carrying a mountain of resentment on our shoulders, an exhaustion that runs bone-deep, and a body that starts to break down under the weight of all the things we should have said no to.
Saying no isn’t just about self-preservation; it’s about self-respect. It’s about recognizing that our time, our energy, and our creative gifts are not infinite resources to be extracted at the whim of others. No is a boundary. No is a reclamation of our worth. No is an act of power.
And here’s the thing—every no we say to something misaligned opens us up to saying yes to what is.
No to working on projects that underpay and undervalue us means yes to pursuing the work that respects our talent.
No to people who take advantage of our generosity means yes to relationships that are built on mutual care and respect.
No to the fear of disappointing others means yes to honoring ourselves.
The more we say no to the things that drain us, the more space we create for the things that nourish us.
Every time we set a boundary, we set a precedent. Not just for ourselves, but for those who come after us. When we say no to exploitation, to disrespect, to overextension, we are not just protecting our own energy—we are paving the way for others to do the same.
And that matters.
Because the film industry, like so many other creative fields, thrives on the labor of those who are too afraid to say no. And the more we normalize boundary-setting, the less acceptable it becomes to treat people as disposable.
This isn’t just about self-care—it’s about collective change.
And let’s talk, even briefly, about what happens when we don’t say no. When we keep swallowing our discomfort. When we keep bending until we break.
We hold it in our bodies.
The stress, the resentment, the exhaustion—it doesn’t just disappear. It lives in our nervous system, in our muscles, in the tension we carry without even realizing it. Over time, it turns into chronic pain, anxiety, burnout, illness. Our bodies remember every time we abandoned ourselves for the comfort of someone else.
And if we don’t release it, it will find a way to demand our attention.
But that’s a post for another time.
For now, let this be a reminder: You are not difficult for saying no. You are not ungrateful. You are not selfish.
You are powerful.
And your power starts with reclaiming your voice, your time, and your boundaries.
So here’s to more no’s in service of our yes’s. Here’s to taking up space without apology. Here’s to knowing that we do not exist to make other people comfortable at the expense of ourselves.
The power of no is the power of us. Let’s use it.

Embracing Change: A Season of Growth, Creativity, and Transformation
As the calendar turns to a new year, I find myself reflecting on the incredible power of pivoting—how sometimes life nudges (or pushes) us in new directions we didn’t anticipate but desperately need. For me, the last few months have been a whirlwind of change, creativity, and personal growth, fueled by health challenges that forced me to reimagine my path.
2023 came with unexpected hurdles, including a diagnosis that required surgery and a focus on healing. These moments, though difficult, gave me time to pause and reevaluate. I asked myself: What truly matters? How can I align my talents, passions, and vision to create something meaningful—not just for me, but for my community?
The answers were clearer than I expected.
What’s New: A Podcast Reimagined
My podcast, Beyond the Makeup Chair™, has been a project close to my heart since its inception. After a short pause, I’m thrilled to announce its relaunch this January! The upcoming season will feature shorter, solo episodes where I share insights, stories, and practical tools for creatives navigating their unique journeys.
Why shorter episodes? As I recover, I’m focusing on what I can give authentically without overextending myself. These episodes will be packed with value and reflection, including personal stories about turning setbacks into comebacks—a theme that resonates deeply for me right now.
Courses That Transform
I’m equally excited to introduce new courses under The Visionary Workshop™! These courses are designed to help creatives manifest their dream careers, develop essential skills, and align their artistry with their highest potential. From Makeup Manifestation™ to the upcoming Beyond Artistry series, I’m pouring everything I’ve learned into these programs to empower artists and visionaries like you.
The Power of Pivoting
If this season has taught me anything, it’s that pivoting isn’t about failure—it’s about recalibration. It’s about trusting that even when the path changes, the destination remains the same. For me, that destination is creating a community where creatives feel supported, inspired, and equipped to thrive.
As I continue to heal and grow, I’m more motivated than ever to share these resources and stories with you. Whether through the podcast, courses, or community spaces like The Visionary Workshop™, I want to help you unlock the potential you already hold and guide you toward manifesting your biggest dreams.
Let’s embrace this season of transformation together.
Here’s What You Can Do Next:

The Accidental Wig Maker
"I got into wig making by accident," our expert reveals. "I initially pursued a career as a makeup artist, but the degree program I chose included wig making. From there, my passion for this unique art form blossomed." This unexpected turn led to a thriving career where creativity and precision blend seamlessly on the stage.
Crafting a Wig: A Labor of Love
Creating a wig from start to finish is an intricate process. It begins with renderings and discussions with costume designers and directors, followed by obtaining a head tracing of the performer. Measurements and hairline tracings are crucial, especially for custom wigs, which are meticulously made of full lace.
"I use a technique called ventilating," our expert explains. "Each hair is hand-tied into the fine lace, mimicking the natural density of a hairline. The goal is to have the wig blend seamlessly with the performer’s own hairline. A fitting before the wig hits the stage ensures it looks perfect and fits well, allowing time for any necessary adjustments."
Collaborative Creations
Working closely with directors and actors is essential in achieving the perfect look for a character. "I consider the overall vision of the show and the character, but I also want the actor to feel confident in what they’re wearing," she shares. "Collaboration on all levels is key to creating something truly special."
Overcoming Challenges
Designing wigs and hairstyles for the stage is not without its challenges. Fast scene changes often limit the ability to show the passage of time through hair changes. Additionally, using the performer's own hair can be time-consuming and unpredictable compared to a pre-styled wig.
Ensuring Durability
The rigors of live performance require wigs that can withstand intense use. "We treat wigs with the same care as real hair, using minimal products to avoid brittleness. We also have styling tricks to ensure that wigs hold up during movement and choreography," our wig maker explains.
Innovation and Ingenuity
Innovation is a hallmark of this craft. One memorable instance involved creating an 18th-century inspired wig using a lightweight lampshade base when time was short. "It worked perfectly," she recalls.
Evolution of the Craft
The field of theatrical wig making has evolved significantly. "I've learned to work with various machine-made wigs and understand the nuances of different hair textures," she notes. Diversity and attention to detail have become increasingly important, reflecting a broader range of real, diverse hair.
Advice for Aspiring Wig Makers
For those aspiring to enter the field, education and apprenticeships are invaluable. "You can’t expect to reach the level of those you admire immediately. Put in the work and stay open to learning new skills and techniques. The learning never ends," she advises.
Memorable Projects
Among the many projects, those that are more conceptual and contemporary stand out. "I love thinking outside the box and getting my creative juices flowing," she says.
Achieving Realism
Making wigs look realistic on stage involves customization and meticulous attention to detail. "The wig should sit naturally on the performer’s head, matching their skin tone and mimicking natural hair growth patterns," she explains. "Realistic wigs have a certain frizz and organic movement, just like natural hair."
Debunking Misconceptions
A common misconception is that all wigs look "wiggy." "This often stems from past experiences with poorly made wigs," she notes. "A good wig designer ensures that wigs look natural and blend seamlessly."
Staying Inspired
Staying inspired involves constantly observing other artists, researching historical hairstyles, and watching hairdressing tutorials. "Historical research plays a huge role in my designs, especially for period pieces. The silhouette of a hairstyle can make or break the look," she emphasizes.
Handling Quick Changes
Quick changes and last-minute adjustments are part of the job. "You have to be prepared for anything and use your skills to make it work. The audience usually doesn't notice if something goes slightly awry," she shares confidently.
Dream Project
When asked about a dream project, our expert envisions creating a character from start to finish, delving into every aspect of their story and expressing it through hair. "That would be an achievement for me," she says.
Through dedication, creativity, and a love for storytelling, our wig maker transforms hair into an art form, enhancing the magic of theater one strand at a time.
June Inspiration Wrap up (What's been inspiring me this month?)
I LOVE staying inspired and learning. I’m constantly seeking out new topics… I have a few video essays/podcasts to share this month, scroll on to see the inspiration!
Seeing Beyond Doubt: Embracing the Benefits of a Creative Circle
If you only have suspicious eyes, everyone is a threat.
Several years ago, I was in a relationship with another Special Effects Makeup Artist. He was brilliant, extremely hard working and talented…but deeply insecure. This manifested in many ways, but one of the most damaging was His approach to other artists. The moto seemed to be to keep them as far away as possible to protect his “secrets” (spoiler alert, we have so much to learn from one another!). Unfortunately, I adopted this philosophy while I was in a relationship with him. And to my own detriment, it only led to stagnation. My first real taste of being surrounded by like-minded creatives (besides university) was when I began competitive bodypainting in 2014. What a revelation! Instead of making me feel small and insecure, I felt seen and encouraged. (Yes, even in a competition setting!)
A few years later, I left that relationship and moved to Atlanta to better my film career and discover my own creative path. That’s when I found myself surrounded by brilliant Makeup Artists and other creatives who totally changed my life! How sad to live in a bubble where you only see others as a threat and not as an enhancement to your creative community. I have learned so much since moving to Atlanta and am constantly inspired by my creative peers.
I’m so lucky that I had the courage to leave that self-imposed box and jump out into the world, where I was able to meet inspirational humans who shared my passions. Contrary to the view of my ex, who felt like these types of people would only be competition, I found a new community of friends and people to share my ups and downs. People who understood my unique life path and who were constantly encouraging and uplifting me.
If you only have suspicious eyes, everyone is a threat. But when you have an open heart, you will find other like-minded individuals who share a similar life philosophy as you. So, let this be the encouragement you need to find your tribe, don’t be afraid to see others as peers instead of competition. You’ll be richly rewarded.
Atlanta Voyage's Bold Journeys Article
Amber, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we now have words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is such a funny thing. It's kind of the lie our brain tells us to keep us “safe” from some imaginary harm. Where your brain is acting as this overzealous security guard, constantly on the lookout for non-existent dangers. Instead of fleeing from a ferocious tiger, we’re braving the wilds of public speaking, seeking promotions, or in my case, casually mingling with top-tier celebrities on film sets worth more than a small island. (no big deal, I always remind myself)
In the early days of working as a Makeup Artist for Film and TV, my imposter syndrome was like an untamed beast! Yet, I found, taking the metaphorical leap off the cliff did wonders to silence that nagging doubting voice in my head. “Do it scared” became my life-saving mantra. It’s all about showing up, even if your knees are shaking, and proving to yourself that you can and will face your fears and that even if you fall on your face (you might and that's OKAY!), you will get back up, dust yourself off…evaluate the lesson learned, implement the lesson and stride forward.
Here’s the kicker: I’ve kicked imposter syndrome to the curb. Yep, you heard me, it’s gone. How, you ask? After over 15 years working with the faces of the rich and famous, from CEOs to silver screen stars, and even a U.S. President, it hit me—we’re all just gloriously imperfect humans! And NO ONE, I mean no one has a clue what they’re doing 100% of the time, so technically, we’re all faking it till we make it. If everyone’s an imposter, then no one is, right?
So, prioritize showing up for numero uno—you. Convince yourself that no tumble is too great, no blunder too grand, and you’re practically there. The rest is a sprinkle of luck, which is really just being ready when chance comes knocking.
You’ve totally got this, whatever your “this” may be.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Of course! My name is Amber Michael and I am a Makeup Artist and Designer for Film/TV. I have now worked in the industry for over 15 years (time is absolutely mind blowing!). My passion for the performing arts ignited at the tender age of five, through theatre and local commercials where I acted, danced, and sang my way into creating a new world for myself. In high school, I discovered my interest in makeup artistry, and I was able to enhance performances by applying stage makeup to myself and my peers, unbeknownst to me, marking the start of what would soon become my career. After High School graduation and throughout University, I found myself working on various projects, from stage productions to music videos, commercials, and indie films as a Makeup Artist.
In 2016 I decided to move to Atlanta to better chase my dreams of working in the Film Industry at a real professional level. Moving to Atlanta was the best decision I have ever made! (If you are called somewhere, go!) In one year I was already working on my first major Television show "The Walking Dead" where I was really tested physically (and mentally, sheesh) by such a demanding set with extreme outdoor locations, it felt very much like putting in my dues. A few years after that I was finally able to join the union, IATSE 798, which has given me the amazing opportunity to take on more major Film and TV productions.
I have had so many dream "pinch me!" moments. And I am honestly so filled with gratitude! I Department Headed my first Major TV show for Paramount+, "Long Slow Exhale" in 2021, I Keyed the final "Halloween Ends" reshoots with Jamie Lee Curtis (spoiler alert! She is my favorite human I have ever worked with!) for Department Head Michael Mosher, had the honor to apply countless special effects prosthetics for "Guardians of the Galaxy III'' (we broke a world record!), Collaborated with the Department Head and Designer of, and applied beautiful work for, Disney's latest "Haunted Mansion" film, and MOST excitedly was hired *personally* by film director David Yates (of the"Harry Potter'', "Fantastic Beasts" franchises) to collaborate on designing bodypaint for his latest film, "Paint Hustlers'', starring Emily Blunt. Everything was feeling amazing! Then, like for everyone in the industry, everything came to a screeching halt due to the strikes in 2023. I know many of us are still reeling!
But! I have never stopped moving forward, and in this industry you have to roll with the punches. So, I have been keeping my creative mind busy by writing my blog, full of tips and tricks for production Makeup Artists and interviewing industry leaders. Which has been very exciting and enlightening! (*Hint hint* link below!) Who knows what the future holds, but I'll be ready!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Embracing the role of a perpetual learner is the secret sauce to maintaining relevance in this ever-evolving industry. Recognizing that the landscape is a mosaic of diverse perspectives, it’s crucial to remember that your unique viewpoint is valuable and warrants expression. Above all, consistently presenting the best version of yourself and resisting the siren call of fear, propels you to greater heights—coupled with a dash of charm and a sprinkle of humor, you will go far! So, maybe more than three haha!
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect, and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always on the lookout for fellow visionaries who value creativity and dedication as much as I do. Collaborating with filmmakers, photographers, and fellow makeup artists is my kind of jam! May Inspiration Wrap up (What's been inspiring me this month?)
I LOVE staying inspired and learning. I’m constantly seeking out new topics…and this month I have been on a Mel Robbins KICK! I absolutely love her courses and podcast. I have included two of my favorite podcast episodes below!
Podcasts and videos are a breeze because they stay nicely stacked in the online realm. BOOKS however, books follow me all around my house in teetering stacks! (ha-ha) Here are just a few that have been inspirational to me this month!
I Found ‘Year of Yes’ to be funny and inspirational, especially as a woman working in the Entertainment Industry. I loved getting to peek inside her creative process and hearing all about how she faced her anxieties, built a strong friend group/Network and pushed through challenges surrounding her ability to be in the spotlight. It’s a fast, entertaining and enlightening read!
I’m still going through ‘Meditations’ daily and highly recommend buying a copy to keep next to your bed side. just reading a few pages a day is inspiring.
Now, this next one…I must confess it isn’t so much a “May” inspiration, as it is a “Life” inspiration…but The Artists’ way is AMAZING! And going through the 12 weeks and continuing to journal everyday has changed my life. And NO, that is not an overstatement. I promise.

Do it scared! Moving past imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is such a funny thing. I believe it stems from the lies our brain tells us to keep us "safe" from some imaginary harm. Helpful when we’re living in the jungle, not so helpful when we just want to succeed in our careers. Where your brain is an overzealous security guard, constantly on the lookout for non-existent dangers. But instead of fleeing from a ferocious tiger, we're braving the wilds of public speaking, seeking promotions, or in my case, casually mingling with top-tier celebrities on film sets worth more than a small island.
Do it scared! Even in an arena made for NBA games. You deserve to be in that room!
Me on set with Actor Josh Lucas for Television series “Long Slow Exhale” 2022
In the early days of working as a Makeup Artist for Film and TV, my imposter syndrome was like an untamed beast. I would get physically ill before every single day on a new set, because of a barrage of fears and anxieties. (Also, having a properly packed set bag went a long way in making me feel more prepared to handle whatever came my way. But we’ll talk more about that another day.) Yet, taking the metaphorical leap off the cliff did wonders to silence that nagging doubter in my head. "Do it scared" became my life-saving mantra. And little by little those anxieties calmed and I developed coping mechanisms to help along the way. It's all about showing up, even if your knees are shaking, and proving, to yourself, that you can and will face your fears and that even if you fall on your face, you will get back up, dust yourself off...evaluate the lesson learned, implement the lesson and stride forward.

(Partially Adapted from an article originally featured in Atlanta Voyage's "Bold Journey.")
Confession Time: Why a professional Makeup Artist is “over” makeup (well, not exactly)
I’ve been a Makeup Artist for almost two decades and its finally time to spill the tea…
I’ve been a Makeup Artist for almost two decades and its finally time to spill the tea… I'm over of the endless parade of the 'latest' makeup must-haves (Just how many eyeshadow palettes does one need? Spoiler: We all have the same number of eyelids.) and tutorials that seem aimed at beginners, students and enthusiasts at best. What really gets my brushes bristling is the thirst for knowledge that goes beyond the surface. Of course, I adore the artistry of makeup, and there's nothing quite like the rush of mastering a new technique. But let's talk deeper skills – the kind that don't come in a compact. I want MORE in-depth and better education. There’s more to being a makeup artist than just wielding that brush.
In the glitzy world of showbusiness, it's not just about the glam (or the gore). It's about crafting stories, sculpting characters, and the alchemy of collaboration. That, to me anyway, is wayyyy more important than learning about a new highlighter. I'm all for the thrill of a fresh product drop, but what about leveling up our game? Let's deep dive into the ecosystem of entertainment, learn the language of lighting, the rhythm of the set, and how to weave a visual tale that captivates. It's time to swap the eyebrow tutorials for a masterclass in storytelling, to step into the shoes of those we adorn, and truly understand the narrative behind every stroke of the brush. Because, my fellow artists, that's where the true enchantment lies – in the symphony of skills that elevate us from makeup artists to creators of dreams.
I yearn for a renaissance in our education, where the focus shifts from the superficial to the substantial. Let's delve into the psyche of the actor, understand the canvas from their perspective, and in doing so, refine our own mastery. In the heart of collaboration lies the true alchemy of makeup artistry. It's not about the next best concealer; it's about concealing the boundaries between departments, blending expertise to enhance our narrative prowess and carving away at long held barriers. This is where the true magic happens
Quick story time! Many moons ago, I used to be a competitive Body Painter, and I body painted for many years before actually being on the other side of the brush myself. Now, I have always taken care of my models and talent, making sure they had enough water, kept their knees bent to avoid passing out, ate, took breaks etc. But nothing gave me a better insight into just how to take better care of them, like being body painted myself. It wasn’t until I had to stand still for 6 hours (while being body painted by then 5-time world champion body painting duo Scott Fray and Madelyn Greco *humble brag*) the first time, that I realized it was a full-body work out. I was a quivering limp noodle by the end of the painting day (not to mention the hour long photo shoot that followed) and in complete shock! HOW?! I had no idea that standing still was so much work. What a revelation! Maybe this is obvious to some, but I didn’t have a clue the full extent of the situation until I became the canvas.
What I’m trying to say is, we desperately need different perspectives to become the best professionals we can be. I think professionals need different outlets for inspiration, motivation and education than what is mostly offered and seems to be intended for the beginner, student and enthusiast (or just to drive sales, thanks consumerism!). I want to be a beacon to other professional Makeup Artists who feel the same. I hope to build a more intentional community of Artists who wish to take their craft to higher levels and be surrounded and inspired by other Artists who wish to do the same.
For many years now, I have felt that my personal community was sorely lacking and I struggled to find the connection and resources to discover the community that my soul was desperately longing for. Then, this year, an epiphany…I have to build that community for myself. It doesn’t just exist in a vacuum, waiting for me to stumble across it. Or even worse…it isn’t going to come knocking on my hermit cave door. So, through this blog and beyond, I hope to build that community and be a guiding light to others who are like minded, others who want more and who are longing for a deeper more meaningful connection, and continued education in this weird place we know as the Entertainment Industry.
Don’t get me wrong there does exist a few amazing resources out there for the professional working Makeup Artist. One such resource is The Powder Group! The founders Michael DeVellis and James Vincent have created a wonderful community for support, connection and continuing education in this ever growing industry. Their work is inspirational and to be commended! I’d love to see more of this type of community created for working professionals. Check out their website to learn more about their mission and how to become a member!
That’s all for now! Until next time!
Inside the Actor's Bag (Mastering Organization and Cleanliness with multiple actors)
I've received numerous requests to reveal how I assemble 'actor bags' for major film sets, commercials, and more. It's an activity I thoroughly enjoy! (Shoutout to my Virgo moon!) So, let's get started!
I've received numerous requests to reveal how I assemble 'actor bags' for major film sets, commercials, and more. It's an activity I thoroughly enjoy! (Shoutout to my Virgo moon!) So, let's get started!
The Vivian is my preferred set bag and my staple choice, particularly when I'm exclusively attending to one or two actors. See how I carry everything to set and help elevate any nagging anxieties by reading this previous blog post here!
The Vivian, decked out with the MYO cases for two actors.
The efficiency of the Vivian is significantly enhanced by utilizing MYO pro cases, one for each actor. These cases are magnetic and can hold an extensive amount of makeup. The magnetic pan also serves as a palette for blending makeup, which can be easily wiped clean and sanitized daily.
If you're managing more than two actors, individual 'actor bags' are essential. With a variety of options out there, I'm sharing what works for me: for multiple actors, I tend to use a Hinza tote to carry each person's bag, all neatly organized inside. When you arrive to set, anyone from your team can easily jump in for a touch-up, by grabbing the needed actor bag and heading in for last looks!
See below for a step-by-step guide on building an ‘Actor Bag’ and how to store and carry them all to set with ease!
Social Media is a Lie (and other things I wish they’d start teaching in kindergarten)
Unfollow, unfriend, block and unsubscribe from anyone who ignites even a single spark of negative emotion within you. Yes, ANY spark! (it’s okay, you have my permission…and they won’t even have a clue!)
But what about fueling the creative fire with inspiration instead? Read the full blog post for a glimpse at how!
Unfollow, unfriend, block and unsubscribe from anyone who ignites even a single spark of negative emotion within you. Yes, ANY spark! (it’s okay, you have my permission…and they won’t even have a clue!)
Comparison is the killer of creativity and self-confidence, but it can also be the secret sauce to your ambition and drive. so, how do we strike that elusive balance?
After I first moved to Atlanta, I joined a Makeup Artist Social group, where this dilemma was a recurring theme. I, too, was ensnared by the "highlight reel" illusion of social media. But I soon had an epiphany: by removing people from my digital circle (thank you “mute”) and curating a feed of those who fuel my growth in constructive, uplifting ways, I could dive headfirst into my passions and creativity, rather than languish in the shadows of inadequacy. I’m certainly not the first to have this revelation… but it still is worth shouting from the roof tops! So, I began to encourage those around me to do the same (and now you!), be inspired by those in your feeds, not jealous!
She is us. we are her.
However, when jealousy does emerge (and this is totally normal), consider it a recognition of your own desires—what your peer has achieved, you can achieve as well! Seeing them on stage accepting their Emmy is incredible, isn't it? Knowing them personally... if they can achieve that, so can you! Let it inspire you! Push you to work harder. Or…Mute. that’s okay too.
Hmm, what’s it called again? oh yes, that’s right! the formidable creature— “Imposter Syndrome”, I’ll delve deeper into this in a future blog post and an upcoming feature in Atlanta Voyage’s “Bold Journey” (Out now!). But for now, let’s take care of the social media scaries! So many things can feed this creature, but I have evicted it from my mental space. And should our paths cross on set, I'll help you evict yours as well!!
Everyone is entitled to a seat at the table. And if the table doesn’t suit us, we will build our own. And if the room proves inadequate for our table, we’ll construct our own room! (Confused? Hang tight, you'll catch on!)
Remember, the art, life snippets, and all that jazz (!) you post on social media are often the highlight reel of your days. It's the same story for pretty much everyone else. A montage of these shiny moments doesn't paint the full picture of the day-to-day life. So, stacking up your journey—be it in your career, personal life, or love saga—against someone else's curated feed? That's just not fair. It's like comparing apples to a painting of apples—similar, but one's juicier than the other. Keep it real, folks!
And…Cut! Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes action. (don’t mute me—I’m inspiring, I swear!) A new blog post premieres every Friday brimming with savvy advice, clever techniques, and exclusive conversations with the veterans of the industry. Stay tuned!! The properly packed set bag (how I use preparation to alleviate anxiety)
If you know me well, you know I used to have debilitating anxiety. Like, always get my meals to go at restaurants, debilitating. Like, not want to leave my house…sick to my stomach…bathroom 20 times in an hour, debilitating. If you don’t know me… well, now you know. TMI? Oh well! 2024 is the year of authenticity!
What in the world does that have to do with a properly packed set bag!? Read the blog post to find out!
My anxieties would peak at the beginning of every single new job. Every time, without fail. I’d be lying if I said I had totally defeated all of my anxieties, that anxiety was a long distant memory of the past. But! I HAVE made huge strides in learning coping mechanisms and moving through my life in a positive direction, by not allowing my anxieties to control the opportunities I accept and reject (and that part is important too, because what you say “no” to can be just as important, if not more so, than what you say “yes” to but we’re talking anxieties here not the power of “no”… maybe more on that another day.)
You might be wondering, what does this have to do with properly packing a set bag? Well, a lot, for me anyway. Maybe it’s my Virgo moon, but the more prepared I am, the less I can hear that little voice in the back of my mind, whispering all of the things that can and probably will (OMG!) go wrong. And even when I can hear that little voice now, it’s just a whisper, not a full-throated shout like it used to be. So, my biggest coping mechanism for anxiety, at work, is packing a well-stocked and organized set bag!
One of the many ways I haul it all to a commercial or a day-playing gig.
So, let’s begin by getting just one thing straight. There is no perfect set bag that works for every single makeup artist, and is also perfect for every single situation, but I do think the Vivian Set Bag + a medium Hulken bag (not sponsored… but it could be wink wink) gets me pretty close! Now, I also have a few different set-ups, as seen in the previous image, that involves Zuca cases and a very strong collapsable cart that I use mostly for one-off gigs, like day-playing or commercial work, but I wanted to focus specifically on the on-set workflow, for Film/TV when I’m working a full-time project. I would be more than happy to break down what day-playing or commercial workflow looks like in a different post, if you’re interested!
Here’s me in my on -set workflow, featuring The Vivian Set bag and MYO pro travel makeup case, with Actor Carlos PenaVega.
Now, I often make modifications to EVERYTHING I use, and I highly recommend you do the same… But these two bags are such work horses and practically perfect in every way (ala Mary Poppins, but they put Ms. Poppins to shame by how much they can pack in! Do you doubt it? Just keep reading.). they have saved my neck and back as well as my proverbial ass, when I have been able to basically pack a small makeup trailer in that Hulken and drag it through the woods! ANYWAY! On to show and tell… that’s really why you’re here right?
Up first, is my absolute favorite work horse, that always comes to play, even when the Hulken stays back in the trailer. The Vivian Set bag. Now, truth be told, I was actually dead set against liking this bag when I first saw it. GASP! I know, but I said 2024 was the year of authenticity, so here we are. Every set bag I had, up until the Vivian, was clear and I could easily see every single thing inside my bag, I knew exactly where it all was. No way was I getting a black opaque set bag! Boy was I wrong... Not only do I now prefer the all-black bag, but I also don’t think I will ever go back to a clear, plastic vinyl set bag. But who's to say.
Here is the current state of my Vivian set bag. A little worse for wear, I told you this was NOT sponsored haha! But she has a LOT of life left!
This bag is perfect for working with one or two actors but can also work if you’re doing Background work or have more actors…and I’ll show you how. (This involves my favorite Hinza bucket, but we’ll get to that later). For each actor, I love to use the MYO Cosmetics Pro Travel Makeup Cases, they have a variety of colors to choose from, helping to make them more easily distinguishable. (plus, the case is perfect for me and my personal makeup for when I travel!)
A look inside the vivian…the workflow on a night shoot in the middle of the woods. Notice the pink and blue MYO cases!
The Hulken (with optional rain cover, now they make hulkens with a built-in cover! SMART!) in all her glory! You can see, if you look hard enough, that I have added a layer of gold duct tape around the bottom as a preventative measure against the wear and tear of dragging this poor thing through the woods, down the streets, you get the idea.
Looking into the belly of the Hulken beast! I have customized the inside by reinforcing the walls with corrugated plastic panels, a canvas bucket insert and a purse organizer!
So, I said earlier that I implement another item when more than one or two actors are under my watch, and that is the Swedish Hinza bucket! It is perfect for carrying actor bags easily to set!
By using the Hinza to carry all of your individual actor bags, your Vivian set bag is free to hold your more specific tools, and shared/expendable items like sunscreen, blotting papers, tissues, disposables, etc.
I am always evaluating my workflow and making changes to make my life easier on set! I am constantly taking notes on my phone, exchanging links to awesome new products with my peers and generally upgrading how I work for each new project and new talent! Figure out what works for you! Check out what your peers are doing! And don’t let your anxieties of being unprepared ever get in the way again!

Me on the streets of NYC reppin’ the Vivian!
